A Potted History of my Poetry

I started at the age of 6 winning gold medals for saying (other people’s) poems at the Feis in my home town of Omagh, N.Ireland. Around this time I started writing poetry and bring asked to perform it around my primary school. Went to Uni in York, studied Politics and English (perfect poetry degree), set up a poetry night, got into hip hop, Mcing, was part of Soul Spun Soundsystem, now the biggest event promoters in York. Moved to Belfast Jan – Jun 2008 and got my first big break in Belfast, running poetry workshops, supporting Scroobius Pip vs Dan le Sac and Skinny Man and winning the Belfast Poetry Cup. Since moving to London in June 2008 I’ve thrown herself into the poetry scene. I also host and programme events.

You’re were one fiery cracker of a craic-er at Open Wide Alaska Studio on Sat.
I wasn’t heckling – just cackling with laughter! Thanks from all the audience too.

    Catherine,
Just seen you perform at the Swindon Slam (May 7, 2011).
You ooze talent, courage, intellect, performance and present in slick-chic style.
I’d still like to exchange views on spiritual belief though!
Where do you MC in London? Would like to come along sometime!
The Omagh poem was superb…you are a winner….
    With a winning, confident personality.
I look forward to the Poems and Pints night next week.
    Hope we can speak then.
    Wishes, Shaun

Wow. i’m not averse to good craic, but how often do you just bump into a poet on a train? Especially a brilliant poet – and discover wonderful writing and performance. Serendipity is a wonderful thing. Still waiting for chocolate.

    • catbrogan says:

how wonderful to meet you too! liberation from the personal office and connectiong with people is the key. got the chocolate/ nutrition/ corporation control of food chain poem started

Hello Catherine I have been reading your poetry and I hope you do not mind but I have used one of your poems in a poetry challenge I have been doing this year! In December I rather foolishly accepted a challenge to publish a poem of my choice on the same subject every Sunday for the whole of this year. For my sins I chose as my subject war. This Sunday I decided to see if I could find a poem on the troubles. Your poems leapt off the page at me. I have to the best of my ability written what I believe to be the truth about you and I have made sure anyone who reads my blog can track back to your blog . I do hope this is all okay with you. I also want to say I do like your work. be well and happy . willow xx

    • catbrogan says:

You are very welcome to use my poems somewhere else. thanks for crediting me and letting me know. I have quite a few poems about war!

      • willowdot21 says:

Catherine – an old teacher here! Taught you history in Loreto in Year 8 many moons ago! Always said I’d read about you some day in the papers. So delighted with your success! Loved your Omagh ha poem! What an amazing talent.

  13. The following article, “Catherine Brogan | Performance Poet addicted
to Craic-Crochet” demonstrates that u really comprehend exactly what you’re speaking about! I completely agree. Thanks ,Tania

  14. David Davies says:

Hi there, I often wonder about poetry, and reading on how personal yours is, is quite something. I must complement you on the poem ‘Omagh-ah’, and I feel should have been selected in the book that Gerald Dawe selected on ‘War Poetry’. It hits home the pain and fear that people suffered through out Northern Ireland.

I am sure you know and read poetry by Carol Anne Duffy, one of my favorite poems is by her, which is called ‘Valentine’, using beautiful and every day objects to descibe or suggest her feelings.

I wish you all the best in your poetry writting

    David

    Hi Cat,
I was just wondering if you would be coming along to Wilderness Festival again this year? Loved sitting round the fire watching you perform. You ooze charm and talent. Hope to see you there again.
    Take care,
    Emily x
